75 Year Old Harvard Study Reveals the One Secret to Happiness

So many of us spend our entire lives in the pursuit of fame, fortune and financial gain in the belief that it will make us happy. In an effort to study this, Harvard conducted a wide-ranging study that lasted 75 years. Here are some of the highlights and the cliff notes from this study.

Over 700 Participants Observed Over 75 Years!

More than 700 participants were placed in two groups during the Harvard study. One consisted of graduates who typically went into the military, as the U.S. was embroiled in World War II. The other group encompassed individuals who were poor, troubled and disadvantaged.

Individuals in the Harvard study were simply evaluated based on one criteria - what made them happy.

Their belief system was that working hard was the key to success, while many of today’s young adults believe that a high level of achievement is the pinnacle of success and all they want in life will automatically follow.

Relationships Matter More Than You Think

The truth that emerged from the study was far different than anticipated. Some of the individuals from both groups went on to gain social prominence, while others were at the other end of the spectrum and suffered from poor health and pain, cognitive decline, isolation and loneliness.

The one undeniable fact was that subjects who were happiest had invested in their best future self by cultivating relationships. Those who had strong social connections lived longer, were healthier and were happier with their life whether they met their original life goals or not. It was the quality of their relationships that mattered most.

The Psychology of Feeling Good

Today, we live in a culture of youth in which someone who is perceived as "old" by their physical appearance can be passed over for raises, promotions, and professional opportunities. Personal pain, whether it’s emotional or physical, is magnified by bad relationships and can make you look older.

Good relationships protect our brains and bodies – and that includes the relationships we have with ourselves. When you feel good about the way you look, you’re happier, more confident and have a better self-image.

Regardless of how we feel about it, research has amply proven has amply proven that individuals who are perceived as more attractive earn more, prosper professionally, and generally receive more attention. Looking good is no longer vain – it’s a critical requirement.

Start By Taking Care of Yourself

Your relationship with yourself is equally important as those you have with others. Looking and feeling younger, more attractive and vital can change your entire outlook.

The problem is that most people look for a quick fix where none exist. Being happy requires you to be healthy in mind, body and spirit. Part of this is looking and feeling your best.

Maintaining your looks is a lifelong endeavor and there’s no substitute for taking care of yourself at every age.
